OUTDOOR events across the country fell victim to the unseasonal monsoon which swept across the country over the last few days and Mayo did not go unscathed – with Ladies’ Day at Ballinrobe Racecourse being the most high-profile casualty.
Racing went ahead as planned yesterday evening (Monday) but the Racecourse Committee made the decision to pull the extravagant Ladies’ Day competition.
“We just felt that a lot of planning had gone into the event and with another meeting coming up on Sunday week, we decided to take a chance and hope for better weather then,” said Ballinrobe Racecourse Manager, John Flannelly.
TG4 presenter Daithí Ó Se was due to be special guest judge on Monday night but as he is unavailable on August 24, due to his Rose of Tralee commitments, his place on the judging panel will not be taken by Horse Racing Ireland’s Fashion Ambassador and TV3’s Xposé presenter, Karen Koster.
The prizes will remain the same; the winner of this year’s Best Dressed Lady Competition on Sunday, August 24, will win €2,000 worth of Newbridge Silverware courtesy of sponsors Martin Murphy Newsagent and Jeweller.  All ten fashion finalists picked from the glamorous crowd by Karen will receive a goodie bag, including a bottle of Jacob’s Creek Sparkling Rosé. The first race on August 24 is off at 2.35pm and the feature race is the Watertower Steeplechase.
