New company set to create 100 jobs in Crossmolina
Anna-Marie Flynn
OVER 100 jobs are expected to be created in the north Mayo town of Crossmolina in the coming months. A new company, Woodchip Manufacturing Ltd, could now serve as a glimmer of a hope in the region which has failed to recoup jobs lost following the closure of Bellacorick’s Bord na Móna plant and Henniges on the Crossmolina Road in Ballina several years ago. In his parting address yesterday (Monday), outgoing Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr Seamus Weir, said he will continue to work on the issue of job creation in the area and added he has high hopes for the new Crossmolina industry. “This company is going to specialise in making woodchip and hopefully this Council will give them its support as this will be a big benefit for the area. It is a unique type of project and will create 100 jobs or more, should it go to plan,” he said. Cllr Weir added that both he and the County Manager, Des Mahon, have held talks with the industry’s backers and are confident that there will be a good result in terms of employment and environment. He said the boost would be timely as the area ‘needs a chance to recover’ with many locals failing to become gainfully re-employed. Moygownagh-based councillor Eddie Staunton echoed the fact that there is huge excitement regarding the project. “I really hope that this will materialise and that we can do everything possible to assist,” he said.
