Funding to reinstate coastal protection on Bertra beach has been approved by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
ACTION NEEDED Local councillors were concerned at the damage being done to Bertra beach.
€75,000 allocated for Bertra repairs
Neill O’Neill
FUNDING to reinstate the coastal protection on Bertra beach has been approved by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. A large section of the blue flag beach was damaged by the sea in recent months, with the rock walls and gabions erected by Mayo County Council torn down and scattered around by surging tides. Last week the announcement was made that €75,000 has been approved to repair the rock armour and gabions – a move that was warmly welcomed by members of Westport Town Council and Mayo County Council who had highlighted the issue, and by Mayo-based Dáil deputies. Director of Services in the Westport Electoral Area, Mr Peter Hynes, also welcomed the funding and confirmed that some work was carried out on Bertra last week to tidy up the beach ahead of the official commencement of the tourist season next month. “We have a standing list of projects,” he told The Mayo News, “so Bertra was given a bit of priority. We welcome this allocation and will now begin reinstating the work that has been done in the past to protect the beach and look to make good the damage that was done there in recent months.”
