Retail giants Tesco are set to provide 90 jobs in Ballinrobe, when they open there later this year.
Tesco to provide 90 jobs in Ballinrobe
A MAJOR jobs boost is in the pipeline for Ballinrobe, when retail giant Tesco opens its latest Mayo store there. The new store, currently under construction at a site on the Claremorris Road, will employ 90 people when it opens later this year. The news has been welcomed locally. “This is a welcome jobs boost for the town and surrounding areas and hopefully most of these jobs will be taken up by local people,” said Denise Horan, chairperson of Ballinrobe Community Development Council. “While there was some initial resistance to the idea of Tesco opening in Ballinrobe, with fears for the future of small retail outlets in the town, I think everyone – including the local retailers – now accepts that this is simply reality and we are better off having local people doing their shopping in town rather than in Castlebar or Claremorris, which has been the trend in recent years. “It is up to the existing businesses in town to make themselves attractive to customers and to be competitive and I think that is a challenge they are ready to embrace,” she added. Tesco Ireland opened its doors in Westport late last year and recently launched its online shopping service in Mayo.
