3 Mayo ladies to look out for

3 Mayo ladies to look out for

FOOTBALL Sarah Rowe, Shauna Howley and Laura Brennan will all have key roles to play at Croke Park next Saturday

Sarah Rowe
Kilmoremoy

A SHOULDER injury sustained in Australia while on AFLW duty with Collingwood — that required surgery — delayed the strike forward’s return to action with Mayo.
But she showed against Galway recently that class is permanent with a typically energetic and clever display of inside forward play.
She shot three points from play against the Tribeswomen and her versatility and skills-set means that Michael Moyles has the option of deploying her in a range of positions.
Rowe is a proven big-game player who should revel in the wide open spaces of Croke Park.
She has scored seven points so far in the championship but there should be more to come.

Shauna Howley
Knockmore

IT hasn’t taken the talented young forward long to find her feet at inter-county level again after sitting out the last two seasons.
Howley is Mayo’s top scorer in the championship after shooting 0-19 (nine frees) in four games en route to next weekend’s All-Ireland semi-final.
Her nerveless kick that beat Monaghan in the free-taking shoot-out last month won’t be forgotten any time soon.
It showed that as well as footballing ability, Shauna has the same sort of temperament that stood her brother, Trevor, the former Mayo defender, in such good stead during his career.

Laura Brennan
Hollymount

THE talented goalkeeper from Mayo Abbey made her league debut back in 2019 and has been a key part of the Mayo squad since, battling it out for the number one jersey with Aisling Tarpey.
Laura watched Mayo’s first three championship games against Cavan, Monaghan and Armagh from the sidelines as Aisling wore the number one jersey and held on to it tightly.
But Brennan got her chance against Galway in the quarter-final and took it with both hands; her kick-outs were excellent and were a huge part of Mayo’s successful game-plan.
She’s a terrific shot-stopper who has benefitted from working with the likes of Donal Hughes and MicheΡl Schlingermann in recent seasons.
Laura’s sister, Ciara is also the Mayo U-16 keeper
