Cannabis and ecstasy seized in Claremorris

GARDAÍ in Claremorris are investigating the discovery of approximately €2,000 worth of drugs which were found in two separate searches of premises in the town last week.
Ecstasy and cannabis with a street value of approximately €1,000 each were recovered following intelligence led searches by gardaí.
The first discovery took place on Thursday evening, January 2 when uniformed members from Claremorris Garda Station carried out a search in the Grattan Park area of Claremorris. The operation was based on information received by Community Engagement Officers and as a result a number of deals of suspected cannabis herb were recovered with an estimated street value of €1,000.
The second operation occurred on Saturday, January 4 when members of the Mayo Divisional Drugs Unit supported by members of the Community Engagement team in Claremorris carried out a search of a house near the town centre in Claremorris. Following the search,  ecstasy tablets with an approximate value of €1,000 were seized.
Following this search a male, aged 41, was interviewed in relation to the discovery of the ecstasy and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
Superintendent Gabriel Moran of Claremorris Garda Station welcomed the discovery and appealed to the public for information on drug sales.

Drug driving arrest
Meanwhile, a man was arrested in Ballina on New Year’s Eve on suspicion of drug driving.
Ballina Gardaí were conducting their last checkpoint of 2019 as part of the ‘Choose Your Driver Wisely’ campaign when they stopped a car. The driver of the vehicle failed a roadside test after testing positive for cocaine and was subsequently arrested for drug driving.The Road Safety Authority have stated that addressing the increase in drug-driving is the next big challenge it faces.
