The long-awaited new Castlebar Swimming Pool complex will open to the public on Friday, April 5, next.
Mayo County Council confirmed the news in a statement last Friday.
Ahead of that opening, the council is hosting a viewing and a tour of the pool and gym facility at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar on Saturday, March 30, from 10am to 2pm.
“This is an opportunity to take a guided tour of the new state -of-the-art facilities, meet the swimming pool lifeguards, the team from the The Movement who will operate the gym and the wellbeing professionals at the facility,” said a council spokesperson.
The council says it is aiming to make the Castlebar complex the best leisure centre in Ireland.
Mayo footballer Andy Moran’s company The Movement, which already has a gym near MacHale Park, will operate the gym at the €12 million facility.
Speaking last December, Moran said his team is looking forward to running the gym in the complex.
“We are delighted to have been chosen to take over the tenancy of the gym facilities at the Lough Lannagh Leisure Facility. It is a proud day for the team at The Movement to be able to expand into a partnership with Mayo County Council and provide a high quality service to the people of Mayo within a top-class facility which will be the envy of many across the country. We can’t wait to get up and running,” said the well-known Mayo footballer.
The new facility comprises an eight-lane competitive swimming pool, toddler learning pool, gym and aerobics studios, steam room, sauna and general purpose rooms.
