Gardaí in Castlebar are investigating the serious assault of a young woman in the county town on St Stephen’s night
Gardaí in Castlebar say they are following a definite line of enquiry in their investigation into the alleged rape of a young woman in the county town on St Stephen’s night.
The allegation was reported to gardaí in the early hours of December 27 when a woman aged in her 20s presented herself to Castlebar Garda Station in a distressed state. The woman reported the allegation after she had been socialising in Castlebar earlier in the night, and the incident is alleged to have taken place between 2am and 2.30am.
A laneway along Lucan Street in Castlebar was later forensically examined by investigating gardaí and the woman was brought to the sexual assault unit in Galway for a medical examination.
A Garda spokesperson said that the investigation is progressing and they are following a ‘definite line of enquiry’. A statement was taken from the complainant on Friday morning and gardaí are studying CCTV footage of the nightclub that the woman attended on St Stephen’s night.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 9038200.
