A SUM of money was taken from a Newport café in the early hours of Sunday morning last.
Two men were caught on CCTV breaking into Kelly’s Kitchen at 6.30am via a side door of the premises.
Speaking to The Mayo News owner of Kelly’s Kitchen, Shauna Kelly, described the criminals as ‘brazen’.
“They were very brazen, the alarm went off and they stayed another three or four minutes.”
Various CCTV systems from businesses on the street show that the men were approximately one hour in Newport where they walked up and down the street trying various businesses’ doors.
After 20 minutes attempting to break into Kelly’s Kitchen, the men gained access and then removed the tray from the till which contained a small sum of money and walked down the street with it to their car.
“We’re just thankful nobody was hurt and if they trashed the place we wouldn’t be open for a couple of days,” said Shauna, who reopened her business on Monday.
With CCTV footage of the men and their vehicle currently being analysed by gardaí, Ms Kelly hopes the criminals will be caught soon.
“I hope they’re caught, for someone else’s sake.”
