Bowers Walk closed for OPW maintenance

The Bowers Walk has been closed for a number of weeks due to maintenance work by the OPW

THE popular Bowers Walk has been closed the last number of weeks due to work being undertaken by the Office of Public Works.
The river maintenance work involves removing debris from the river and must be completed before planned works can take place on the walk itself.
Last August volunteers cleared 50 tonnes of debris and rubbish from the Robe River and now the OPW are continuing further works.
Minister for Rural and Community Development Michael Ring announced funding of €100,000 for the Bowers Walk under the government’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructural Scheme earlier this year, while a further €100,000 was put forward from Mayo County Council’s Strategic Development Fund.
It is now hoped further upgrading of the walk can take place imminently following a tendering process.
“We hope the tendering process will be completed in the coming weeks and works can be done during the summer months,” said local councillor Damien Ryan.
Meanwhile, a list of re-commendations on the town’s traffic management and flow will be revealed in a commissioned study and it is hoped a list of recommendations will be made known by late September.
According to Cllr Ryan, Transport Infrastructure Ireland will fund the traffic alleviation measures in the town if deemed cost-effective.
