Contest to decide top Mayo GAA post

THERE will be a contest for the position of Mayo GAA Board Secretary at the County Convention in Westport on Sunday, December 10.
It had been expected that Dermot Butler from Crossmolina, the current Assistant Secretary, would succeed Vincent Neary from Bonniconlon who will be stepping down next month.
However, it has now emerged that Ronan Kirrane of Davitts GAA club has been nominated for the prestigious post and so the contest for the position will be decided by a vote among Mayo GAA club delegates on Sunday week next.
Mr Butler, who is also the current secretary of Crossmolina GAA club, has been assistant secretary of the Mayo GAA Board for the last four years.
He has also served as County Bord na nÓg secretary during that time.
Mr Kirrane has been secretary of Davitts for the last seven years and has also played an active part in helping to organise and co-ordinate the Mayo GAA Development Draw in recent years.
Meanwhile, Liam Moffatt from Crossmolina looks set to be appointed as the new Mayo GAA coaching officer at the upcoming convention.
The Mayo News understands that the former All-Ireland club championship medal winner, who is also the lead physiotherapist for Mayo GAA, is the only name to be linked with the post.
Moffatt is believed to be the preferred choice of Mayo GAA chairman, Mike Connelly, for the key role. The duo have worked together in recent years on various coaching, injury prevention and player welfare projects.
The Crossmolina native has also been part of both the Mayo senior and under-21 football medical teams for a number of years.
Padraic Carolan from Parke has served as the County Coaching officer for the last five years.
