Firearms owners warned to renew licences

Gardaí urge firearms holders to check that their gun licences are valid ahead of the start of the shooting season

AHEAD of the shooting season, gardaí in Mayo are asking firearm’s holders to check that they renewed their gun licences, which permit holders to use and carry a shotgun or rifle.
In recent years, firearms holders have increasingly failed to renew their licences in time. In most instances, holders have genuinely forgotten to renew the licence.
Mayo gardaí are now proactively addressing the issue and are asking people to examine their licences to ensure they are valid. Gun owners who fail to renew the licence attached to the firearms they possess run the very real risk of having the guns seized by gardaí in the very near future. As failure to produce a licence is an offence, it could also result in a court summons.
On the issue of grant letters from local superintendents, a person must call to the local post office to pay the fee of €80 for three years.
The clear message is that if you own a firearm, you must have a proper, in-date licence. Failure to comply will prejudice a gun holder’s future licence applications.
Garda Firearms Officers are available to assist with any queries at District Headquarters Stations.
