A 65-year-old woman, originally from Doolough, has drowned after socialising with friends while on holiday

GARDAÍ have confirmed that a woman who was holidaying in Ballina drowned accidentally in the River Moy over the weekend. The 65-year-old, who was originally from Doolough but lived in Clondalkin, Co Dublin, has been named as Mary Philomena Calvey (nee Corrigan). It is understood she was socialising with friends in the town before the tragic accident and was on Ballina’s upper bridge shortly before midnight on Friday night before falling into the river.
Mrs Calvey’s body was removed from the water at the Quay in the town early on Saturday morning after an extensive overnight search and rescue mission. Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident and would like to speak to anyone who may have been in the area between 11.30pm and midnight on Friday last.
Mary Philomena Calvey (Phil) is survived by her husband, Bryan and adult children, Michelle, Kevin and Simon, as well as her sister, Pauline, brothers, Paddy, Val,and Tony, grandchildren and extended family.
Her remains will repose at Massey Brothers Funeral Home, Clondalkin tomorrow, Wednesday, from 3.30pm with removal to the Church of the Transfiguration, Bawnogue, to arrive at 6pm. Her funeral Mass will take place on Thursday at 11am followed by cremation.
