Achill beach reopens after water-pollution issue

Dugort Beach on Achill Island has reopened to the public after it had been closed to bathers over the weekend

Dugort Beach on Achill island has reopened to the public after it had been closed to bathers over the weekend. The reason for the closure was due to a pollution issue, which was believed to be caused by heavy rainfall.
The Blue Flag beach was closed on Friday after Mayo County Council carried out a water bathing sample on Tuesday, August 8. The results of the sample showed that there were elevated levels of bacteria present in the water.  According to the notice displayed by Mayo County Council, the beach had been closed due to a diffuse of pollution, due to recent heavy rainfall events.  Mayo County Council yesterday (Monday), confirmed that the water was safe for bathers to use again.
