GARDAÍ are ruling out foul play after the death of a man whose body was taken from the water at Lough Lannagh in Castlebar yesterday afternoon (Monday).
The body of the man, believed to be in his 50s and from the Castlebar area, was retrieved from the lake shortly before 1pm on Monday afternoon. The alarm was raised around 10am when a woman walking along the lake noticed something in the water and alerted a member of the gardaí who was on mountain bike patrol in the area.
The body was recovered by gardaí approximately 15 metres from the shoreline and was taken to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar in order for a post mortem to be carried out. The area around the lake was sealed off and investigated by gardaí.
While the cause of death has not yet been determined, gardaí in Castlebar do not believe there is anything suspicious surrounding the death.
“The body was taken from the water around 12.50pm and at the moment there is nothing to suggest there is anything suspicious surrounding the death,” a garda spokesperson explained.
The spokesperson also confirmed that no person was reported missing before the body was discovered. The deceased has been identified but his name has not been released until his relatives have been notified.

Drugs find
Meanwhile, a man in his 40s was arrested by gardaí after cannabis plants were discovered in a house in Ballyheane on Saturday. It is understood up to five plants were discovered in the house following a search by gardaí.
A man was arrested and detained in Westport Garda Station before he was later released without charge. A file is being prepared for the DPP.
