The man who died in the road traffic accident this morning (Wednesday) at Keenagh crossroads has been named locally as Matty Merrick, a long-serving mails contractor with An Post.
Mr Merrick had been delivering post in the area around 10.30am when his vehicle was in collision with another car containing a young couple from Belmullet.
Mr Merrick, believed to be in his 60s, was declared dead at the scene while the couple were removed to Mayo University Hospital, where their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
David McRedmond, CEO of An Post, has extended his sympathy on behalf of the company to the family of Mr Merrick.
“I am saddened to hear of the sudden death of Mr Merrick. I extended my deepest sympathy and that of An Post to Mr Merrick’s family and his work colleagues,” said Mr McRedmond.
The fatal collision occurred this morning, at the junction with the R312 in the townland of Keenagh.
The scene of the incident is currently still closed to traffic to allow Gardaí to carry out an extensive investigation. The road will not be reopened until later this afternoon. Diversions are currently in place.
The R312 is the main road from Belmullet to Castlebar, and the incident occurred at the junction close to Keenagh Church.
The death of the man marks the first fatality on Mayo roads in 2017.
