Man dies in Keenagh traffic collision

The man's death in two-car collision this morning (Wednesday) marks the first fatality on Mayo roads in 2017

GARDAÍ in Belmullet are investigating the death of a man who died in a two-car collision along the R312 near Keenagh this morning.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 11am this morning (Wednesday), at the junction with the R312 in the townland of Keenagh.
A man believed to be in his 60s and from the locality was declared dead at the scene. The driver of the other car, along with a passenger, were treated for injuries at the scene and transferred to Mayo University Hospital. It is not yet known if their injuries are life threatening.
The scene of the incident is currently closed to traffic to allow Gardaí to carry out an extensive investigation. The road will not be reopened until 4pm this afternoon. Diversions are currently in place.
The R312 is the main road from Belmullet to Castlebar, and the incident occurred at the junction close to Keenagh Church. It is understood that the deceased man was alone in the car, and it is believed to have been delivering post in a private capacity in a private car.
The death of the man marks the first fatality on Mayo roads in 2017.
