Newport woman faces 326 charges of theft and fraud

A woman has been charged with 326 counts of theft and fraud involving the Department of Social Protection in Westport


A WOMAN will appear before next week’s sittings of the Circuit Criminal Court after she was charged with 326 counts of theft and fraud involving the Department of Social Protection  at the Health Centre, Westport.
Mary McLoughlin of Corragaun, Newport, appeared before last week’s sitting of Westport District Court, where she was served with the book of evidence in relation to the offences, which are alleged to have taken place between April 27, 2006, and July 4, 2012.
State solicitor Vincent Deane said he was applying for Ms McLoughlin to be returned for trial to appear before the next sitting of Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court on January 31. Ms McLoughlin was released on bail.
The court also heard that two other persons were served with the same book of evidence.
James Kelly of 11 Horkan’s Hill, Westport, is charged with 42 counts of theft and fraud involving the Department of Social Protection  at the Health Centre, Westport. The offences are alleged to have taken place between March 31, 2006 and November 2, 2007. Mr Deane said the alleged figure involved amounted to €4,700.
James Kilroy of Sheeaune, Westport, is charged with one offence contrary to Section Four of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act, 2001, alleged to have been committed  on March 16, 2010 in the Health Centre, Westport.
Both men are to appear before Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court on January 31 and both were granted legal aid. Legal aid in relation to Ms McLoughlin was deferred.
