CENTENARIAN Peggy Weir (nee Killoran) from Doocastle celebrated her 100th birthday at the weekend. She is pictured with her neighbour Phil Cunningham (left) and her niece Josie McIntaggart.

TO the strains of a Jim Reeves song, they raised their glasses to Peggy Weir on the occasion of her 100th birthday last weekend.
Peggy, who resides on the borderline of Mayo and Sligo close to Doocastle and Bunninadden, was in fine fettle as she welcomed some neighbours and close friends who called by to wish her well on the day that was in it.
Formerly Killoran, she spent some time in England before heading across the Atlantic to the shores of America. She and her husband lived for many years in America before returning to the Doocastle area on their retirement. He died over a decade ago.
“Maggie (as she is known to some locally) is a great lady and she is still enjoying good health,” says her neighbour and friend, Phil Cunningham.
“She is a regular at the Saturday evening Mass in Bunninadden church and she loves music and songs. We sang ‘I Won’t Forget You’ (Jim Reeves) and ‘Nancy Spain’ (Christy Moore) and a scatter of other songs for her in her kitchen the other evening. She was delighted with the music and was very pleased to get some birthday cards and good wishes on her big day.
“Maggie is the last of a family of eight in that generation of the Killoran family. Her niece Josie McIntaggart was over from England for the occasion. She has seen a lot of life and a lot of changes in three countries during her 100 years on this earth. She still has a smile for us all,” reflects Phil.
