The new Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council says he will do all he can in his new position to raise the morale of Council staff.
The issue of morale among the staff of Mayo County Council has been raised a number of occasions in recent months by councillors.
The recent restructuring of elements of Mayo County Council and movement of staff to different sections is believed to be one of the main concerns among some staff.
In his acceptance speech following his election as the Cathaoirleach yesterday, Cllr Al McDonnell recognised the morale of the staff working in the Council is low and vowed to do what he can to help improve their situation.
“Due to a number of factors, the morale amongst the workforce in the county and among many public sector institutions, is low. It is due to a number of factors, not all of which we are in control of. But if there is anything I can do to improve morale and confidence in the workforce, even if it is slightly outside my remit, I think it is important that we do. Unless morale is at its highest, productivity suffers and so do the people we represent,” he said.
