Dr Andrew Kelly, CEO of the ISPCA, attended a public meeting in Castlebar called by the ISPCA Inspector for Co Mayo campaign
The ISPCA Inspector for Co Mayo Campaign held a public meeting on Thursday last, May 19, at the Castlebar Celtic Football Clubhouse, Castlebar. The campaign is raising awareness of the need for an on-the-ground, dedicated Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Inspector in Mayo, and raising funds to help ensure that one is established.
Dr Andrew Kelly, CEO of the ISPCA addressed those gathered. He was quite honest about the uphill battle for animal welfare in Ireland, but also showed evidence of the progress being made, especially since the Animal Welfare Act of 2013 came into force in March 2014.
Dr Kelly touched on the leading stories of the moment, such as the Cavan puppy farm, which the ISPCA had raised concerns about last year, even before the BBC report, as well as a few general details about other cases, where prosecutions occurred.
He also highlighed how an ISPCA Inspector would benefit Co Mayo in terms of investigations into cruelty and neglect and ensuring that there are consequences for those who who do not treat animals properly.
