THERE were great celebrations in Mulranny as Elizabeth McGowan passed another major milestone in her long life when she was presented with her third Uachtaran na hÉireann medal.
A resident of St Brendan’s Unit, Elizabeth or Lizzie to her friends, celebrated her 103th birthday on October 10 Elizabeth (nee McManamon) was born on Inishbiggle Island in 1912 and like the majority of her generation she went to Scotland at a young age to work in the potato fields of Scotland.
In 1937, she married Frank ‘Sonny’ McGowan and lived most of her life in Claggan, Ballycroy. Together they reared eight children; Roger, Packie, Martin, Frank, Nora, Margaret, Mary (RIP) and Betty and she now has a number of grandchildren and great-children.
In recent years she has been residing as a resident in St Brendan’s Unit in Mulranny and she was joined by her family and friends who celebrated her significant milestone with a special birthday Mass.
