Mountain Rescue thank public following Reek appeal

Mayo Mountain Rescue have thanked the public who donated money to repair equipment that was damaged in high winds on Reek Sunday.
The appeal for funds was made shortly after strong winds on Croagh Patrick damaged two of the organisation’s tents and caused considerable damage to equipment. In just four weeks, Mayo Mountain Rescue raised €800, enough to cover the necessary repairs.
“We are delighted with the response of the public to our appeal,” said Ruth Cunniffe, PRO of Mayo Mountain Rescue. “We raised €800 and we were able to repair our marquee tent, which was damaged, as well as our medical tent … The wind broke the poles and ripped the tents. That appeal is now closed, and we want to thank everyone who donated,” she said.

Family fun day
This year, Mayo Mountain Rescue is celebrating 25 years of service, and to mark this special occasion, its members are hosting a free family fun day to thank the Mayo community for supporting them throughout the years.
The event takes place this Saturday, September 5, at the Westport Quay from 12.30pm to 5.30pm. This is a free afternoon of entertainment for the general public, and all at Mayo Mountain Rescue are looking forward to welcoming families, friends and patrons.
There will be a number of children’s activities, including a giant climbing wall, a jenga connect, face painting and live music.
The day, which will be broadcast on Midwest Radio, will also include mountain-rescue demonstrations, questions and answers with team members and refreshments and home-baked goodies.
“Mayo Mountain Rescue is a 100 percent voluntary 112/999 rescue service operating 365 days a year, responding to those lost or injured in the hills and mountains of Mayo. Dedicated to bringing you safely home, this vital service is only made possible by the high levels of commitment shown by our team and the generous donations of the public,” Ruth said.
