Hundreds of people responded to a call from the HSE who are trying to trace the source of an E Coli outbreak.
Hundreds contact HSE helpline after outbreak
E Coli Outbreak Claire Egan
OVER 230 people have contacted the Health Service Executive helpline, which is seeking to trace the exact source of an E Coli outbreak. To date, the HSE West are currently investigating 6 cases of people with gastroenteritis illness due to E Coli O157 infection. The Departments of Public Health and Environmental Health of the HSE West are currently in the process of investigating the source of the deadly bug. There are concerns over a possible association between the infection and people who had visited the Enniscrone region in Sligo during the months of July and August. “As a precautionary measure we would like to identify members of the public who visited, stayed or ate food in Enniscrone, Co Sligo between July 20 and August 20 and subsequently became ill with diarrhoea, vomiting or abdominal pain. E Coli O157 is a very serious cause of gastroenteritis. Further complications can occur among the very young and elderly people as well as those with a weakened immune system and pregnant women,” said a HSE West spokesperson.
