Ten extra beds for Ballina District Hospital
Ten extra beds are to be provided to Ballina District Hospital next month. The addition has been strongly welcomed by Fine Gael Deputy Michelle Mulherin who this will ‘greatly relieve pressure on Mayo General Hospital’.
Eight beds will be open on June 1, while the two remaining beds will be open the following week.
The increase in beds will also mean more staff for the hospital.
Six nursed, two multi-task assistants and two health care attendants have been recruited on a permanent basis. At least five of the beds will be medium dependency.
The Deputy said the beds will also facilitate earlier discharge thus freeing up beds. “This is a great validation for Ballina District Hospital. The Director of Nursing, Marie Alexander and her staff do a excellent job and service for patients. Their efforts are very much appreciated by the Ballina community at large as is the work of the local volunteers in the Friends of St Joseph’s. Also I want to thank Frank Murphy, Mayo HSE management for his assistance and perseverance in achieving this great result,” said Deputy Mulherin.
