A Ballinrobe man has won the prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry award. Patrick O’Malley from Drumhill, a chemist at the University of Manchester is the Royal Society of Chemistry Higher Education Teaching Award winner for 2015.
The award recognises outstanding teaching skills and the development of innovative materials and methods in higher education. Patrick is currently a reader in Physical Chemistry at the university of Manchester and received his BSc, Higher Diploma in Education and PhD degrees from the National University of Ireland (Galway), before working as a postdoctoral researcher at Michigan State University and Brookhaven National Laboratory, New York.
O’Malley, who believes teaching is the most important role for an academic, is thrilled to receive the Royal Society of Chemistry honour. “I hope such awards encourage more young academics to strive for teaching excellence,” he said.
This isn’t the first time Mr O’Malley has been recognised for his teaching efforts. In 2010, he received a University of Manchester Teaching Excellence award and won the 2015 Guardian Higher Education award in the online/distance-learning category.
