Former Queensland MP meets TD cousin
A former minister in the Government of Queensland visited Ballina recently and met with cousin Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin.
Tim Mulherin, a retired Member of Parliament in the Queensland Legislative Assembly visited Ballina to trace his ancestors and to meet many of his cousins for the first time.
Tim’s great-grandfather hailed from Glanduff, Attymass, and emigrated to Australia, and his brother was Deputy Mulherin’s great great-grandfather.
Mr Mulherin served as Member of Parliament for Mackay in the Queensland Legislative Assembly, in a career that spanned 20 years, from 1995 until his retirement in February this year, culminating in his appointment in 2005 as Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Economies, a position he held until 2012. Speaking after his visit, Deputy Mulherin said, “I was pleased to meet my cousin, Tim Mulherin, who, along with his wife Erin, visited the Ballina area to trace his ancestors and to meet relatives.
“I am thrilled to meet him, find out about our connection and his family and understand better how the history and roots of my own family have developed. He has a strong, lifelong passion for all things Irish and now that he is retired I have no doubt he will be a great ambassador for Attymass, Mayo and Ireland,” added Deputy Mulherin.
