POPULAR Irish DJ and Today FM presenter Phil Cawley was on hand to help launch the 2015 Achill Half Marathon and 10k which will take place on Achill Island on Saturday, July 4. This year will mark the running of the Achill Half Marathon for the tenth time and coupled with the 10k it has become one of the most popular events on the AAI circuit and probably one of the most scenic routes in Ireland. The official launch of the Achill Half Marathon and 10k took place last week at the Irish Cancer Society’s Head Quarters in Dublin, and Today FM presenter, Philip Cawley was at hand to model the 2015 event t-shirt and to help Achill Event Management and the Irish Cancer Society to launch the event. This year’s charity partner is the Irish Cancer Society and Pauric Corrigan of Achill Event Management, said they are delighted to be able to raise awareness of the vital service the organisation provides throughout the country. The race route is on the Wild Atlantic Way, giving runners a true taste of the wild, rugged west coast, and though it can certainly be challenging, it is also one of the most rewarding.

Milestone
The organisers have a unique way of making sure all the runners are ready to go when the klaxon sounds the start of the race. “The local Pipe Band will lead the way to the start line, and this unique Achill tradition adds an interesting twist to the start of the race,” explained SeΡn Molloy, Manager of Achill Tourism. “This year is the 10th Half Marathon and we have a few surprises lined up to celebrate this milestone” The Achill Island race is famous in running circles for being superbly organised, with plenty of water stations, and it’s all done on a community, non-profit basis. A portion of the registration fees will be donated this year to the Irish Cancer Society, as well as 75 places in each race where 100 percent of the registration fee will go directly to the charity. In response to feedback from more than 400 of last year’s runners, there will be cash prizes again for the first three males and three females past the finish line, as well as complimentary tea, coffee and sandwiches for runners and an official race party in the evening.
