Pensioner accused of rape dating back over 30 years
A PENSIONER was sent forward for trial to the Central Criminal Court where he faces 96 charges of rape and indecent assault which are alleged to have occurred over 30 years ago.
The man who cannot be named due to reporting restrictions appeared before Achill District Court where he was served with a book of evidence to appear before the current sittings of the Central Criminal Court.
He faces a total of 96 charges, two of which are counts of alleged rape and the remaining charges relate to alleged indecent assault on three individuals.
The court heard that the offences are alleged to have occurred on dates between 1974 and 1981 at various locations in Co Mayo.
Mr Vincent Deane, State Solicitor, said there was no objections to the man being released on bail on condition the accused man has no contact with the witnesses and is of good behaviour.
Mr Thomas Walsh, solicitor for the accused man, applied for legal aid, saying his client, relied largely on the state pension.
Judge Mary Devins granted legal aid for one senior counsel.
