A lorry left the road in the village of Cross yesterday (Monday) morning, leaving it suspended above a river.
It is understood that the collision occurred shortly before 8am, after the small lorry hit a patch of black ice and skidded, hitting the bridge in the centre of the village.
The driver of the vehicle escaped from the truck, which remained hanging over the bridge until a crane removed it yesterday afternoon. A digger was first tasked with removing the vehicle, but a crane was later enlisted with removing it onto an awaiting low loader.
Single lane traffic remained in place between Ballinrobe and Headford and the road was closed from noon, opening at approximately 3pm following the truck’s removal.
One local told The Mayo News that the driver was ‘lucky to escape’.
“That river can be very high at times, he was very lucky,” said the local woman.
