Gardaí investigating four burglaries in the Westport area believe thieves may be using the Great Western Greenway to scope out homes. Many of the burgled properties are located close to the amenity.
The first burglary took place last Wednesday in Rosbeg, Westport. The three other burglaries – one in Clooneen, Kilmeena, and two in neighbouring properties in Slogger Hill, just outside Westport – took place last Friday between 1pm and 6pm.
In the majority of the cases, entry was gained by forcing open a rear window. A small amount of cash was taken from each house. Jewellery was also taken from the home in Clooneen.
The Gardaí are carrying out an intensive investigation into the burglaries. A Garda spokesperson said they could not be certain if one gang was responsible for all four crimes.
“It is too early to say at the moment if they are all connected, but we are asking people to be mindful of any suspicious activity.
“I would ask people to keep an eye on their neighbours’ property if they are away and to contact gardaí immediately if they see anything suspicious,” the spokesperson said.
Property owners along the Greenway have also been asked to be vigilant.
Anyone with any information on the burglaries should contact Westport Garda station on 098 50230.
