Marine biologists, botanists, geologists and even a poet laureate are all set for Inishbofin’s annual gathering
Summer school on Inishbofin set to mark 30th anniversary

THE country’s longest-running environmental school is set to take place on Inishbofin from July 1 to 5 next. The Inishbofin Summer School has been run since 1984 by the Connemara Environmental Education and Cultural Centre in Letterfrack, its Director, Leo Hallissey said: “We bring a multi-disciplined team onto this lovely island. The team includes archaeologists, botanists, marine biologists, geologist, ecologists, musicians, a poet and a dancer and over a week we explore all aspects of this exciting island.”
This school is approved by the Department of Education and Skills as an in-service programme for teachers but is also open to the general public.
This year’s team will include eminent marine biologists Dr Dave McGrath, Dr Cillian Roden, ecologists Sinéad Keane and Gordon D’arcy; archaeologist Erin Gibbons; geologist Eoin McGrath; botanist Dr Michelene Sheehy Skeffington and poet Mary Swander - poet laureate for the State of Iowa.
Connemara Environmental Education and Cultural Centre was founded in 1984 to raise environmental awareness and provide heritage education. Annual festivals and events include Conamara Bog and Sea Weeks, Inishbofin Summer School and Mol an Óige Concerts.
