THE Shrule community are blooming thrilled with the news that Shrule woman Maria Walsh will be this year’s Philadelphia Rose at the 2014 Rose of Tralee festival. Maria successfully made it through the regional finals held in Portlaoise on May 31 and June 1.
Though a native of Boston, Maria (pictured) moved to Shrule with her family in 1994. Her father Vincent is from Carravilla, Roundfort but lived in Boston for a number of years. Maria’s mother Noreen was born in Boston but moved to Leitir Mór in Connemara when she was seven and returned to Boston in her early twenties. Following a similar pattern to her mother, Maria moved back to America in 2010 and now works in Philadelphia.
Studio Manager for clothing and lifestyle brand Anthropologie, Maria had a nail-biting wait to see if she had been successful, as she was one of the last roses to be announced at the regional festival.
News of Maria’s success spread fast to brother Kevin in Los Angeles and sister Eileen in Perth. Maria will now look forward to making a trip to the Kingdom with her parents and younger brother Mikey. The festival takes place from August 15 to 19.
