Voting is well underway across Co Mayo this afternoon as the electorate casts its votes in the Local and European Elections. A total of 61 candidates are running for the seats available on the reconfigured Mayo County Council, while in the new Midlands North West European constituency, 14 candidates are running for four seats in the European Parliament.
There are a total of 227 polling stations in Co Mayo, and polling cards have been sent to all those registered to vote. Voters who don’t have their polling card with them when voting may be asked for ID. Polling stations will remain open until 10pm this evening.
There are also two DΡil by-elections taking place today, in Dublin West and Longford/Westmeath. Almost 2,000 candidates are contesting the 949 local authority seats, while 41 hopefuls are in the race for eleven MEP seats spread over three constituencies.
The count here in Mayo will begin tomorrow morning at the Count Centre in the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar. Counting will begin at 8.30am when postal votes will be opened, and at 9am, all of Mayo’s 227 boxes will be opened so the local and European votes can be separated.
Returning officer for the Mayo local elections, John Condon, told The Mayo News that he is anticipating a very busy day, with final results expected in late evening for the Castlebar and Ballina Municipal Districts, while the final counts in other two districts, Westport and Claremorris, will probably not be completed until the early hours of Sunday morning.
Castlebar will be a hive of activity also on Sunday, as the count for the Midlands North West Constituency also takes place in the TF Royal Theatre.
