Missing Killala woman Sandra Collins was told she was pregnant on the day she disappeared, and the mobile number of the man accused of her murder was found in her fleece, her murder trial heard last week.
Martin Earley (49) of Banagher, Carrowmore-Lacken, Ballina, denies murdering Ms Collins, who disappeared without trace in Killala on December 4, 2000. Despite an extensive search of the Killala area, only a pink fleece she was wearing on the night she disappeared was found.
The much-anticipated murder trial, which is sitting in Castlebar, heard that Ms Collins’s GP confirmed that she was pregnant on the day she disappeared. The prosecution also claimed that she spoke to Mr Earley on that day from a phone box in Killala village.
Mr Earley’s mobile number was written on a piece of paper that was found in the pocket of Ms Collins’s fleece, along with the phone numbers of two abortion clinics in the UK.
The jury of nine men and three women also heard that despite initially denying to gardaí he had a relationship with Ms Collins, he later admitted to gardaí there was ‘sexual contact’ with her and he ‘tried his case with Sandra’.
