Some attempted burglaries were foiled in the Westport area over the weekend
Community Alert warns of spate of burglaries in Westport

WESTPORT Community Alert has warned about a spate of break-ins that occurred over the weekend at houses in both the town and at a number of properties in suburban communities from Kilmeena to Knappagh Beg.
A source told The Mayo News yesterday that one house was ‘practically ransacked’ in The Elms estate as thieves searched for valuables while jewellery and a laptop were stolen from a house in the Ballinrobe Road area. Both incidents occurred during the mid-afternoon on Saturday and may have been linked.
Thieves also attempted to break-into a house in Kilmeena at around 9pm but fled the scene when the alarm was activated after they broke a window. Attempts were also made to enter a house at Claggan, Kilmeena on Saturday night but the suspected burglars also fled back to a dark green car when the owner emerged from the garage.
The group has urged people and local communities to ‘be aware’, to keep an eye out for neighbours, particularly elderly ones, and to report any suspicious activities to the Westport gardaí at 098 25555.
