Death of Newport handball stalwart

The death took place on Saturday last, following an illness, of Liam Burke, one of the best-known figures in the sport of handball in Mayo. Mr Burke (pictured) was heavily involved with Newport Handball Club and with Mayo handball for many years as a player, coach, committee member and fundraiser.
 He was the main driving force behind the annual McGee tournament in Newport, a popular tournament on the handball circuit.
Large crowds attended the removal from his home in Newport on Sunday and Funeral Mass took place in St Patrick’s Church in Newport yesterday (Monday).
Liam is survived by his wife Patricia, son CiarΡn and daughter Maria.
