AN 81-year-old woman who was hit by a car on December 23 last has died at Mayo General Hospital. Mary Keane, originally from Westport and living at Castlehill, Castlebar passed away from her injuries on Tuesday last, New Year’s Eve.
The incident occurred at 1.30pm on December 23, when Ms Keane was struck by a car at the junction of Pontoon Drive and Thornbrook on the Pontoon Road. She was taken to Mayo General Hospital, where she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. She passed away one week later.
The road was closed for a number of hours following the incident as forensic collision investigators attended the scene.
Originally from Westport, Ms Keane returned to Castlebar approximately ten years ago having spent many years working for Kodak in Hemel Hempstead in the UK. The job saw her work for a time in Germany and Canada. She also worked for a time for Westport photographer Liam Lyons.
Her remains reposed at Coady’s Funeral Home in Castlebar on Wednesday with removal to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar. She was laid to rest in Aughavale cemetery in Westport after Requiem Mass on Thursday morning last.
Ms Keane is mourned by her brothers, Chris (Westport), Tommy (Manchester), Pat (London); sister, Dot Gavin (Castlebar); nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Ms Keane was an aunt of Castlebar councillor Blackie Gavin.
