Would-be thieves who cut phone and CCTV wires at a Westport newsagents failed to cut the wires to the alarm
Bungling burglars cut wrong wires in botched break-in
ICONIC Westport Newsagents toy and grocery store, McGreevy’s, was targeted by thieves on Sunday night, less than two weeks after the shop caught the headlines when it was damaged after a stolen jeep crashed and sent a car through its front door.
In a seemingly elaborate intrusion, thieves interfered with the telephone wires on lower Bridge Street and cut what they thought to be the alarm cabling for McGreevy’s. They also tried to disable the camera system in the shop by severing wires running from it, but were halted in their tracks when the alarm activated shortly after they made their entry through an upstairs window. They had gained access through an adjacent property, and it is thought they were planning to spend some time in the shop, only to have their plot thwarted by the alarm system.
Gardaí and the owners arrived on the scene but the culprits had absconded, though it is believed they left without any major gain for all their criminal effort. Anybody who noticed anything suspicious in the vicinity of McGreevy’s around 4am on Sunday is asked to contact Westport Garda Station on 098 25555.
