Gardaí in Westport are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred this morning, June 7, at Sheeaune, Westport at approximately 9.10am. The collision on the main Westport to Castlebar Road, the N5, involved a car and a truck. The collision took place close to a filling station, known locally as the Tip Top Filling Station.
The female passenger, aged 24 years, is believed to be a native of Germany. She was pronounced dead at the scene and the male driver of the car, aged 33, was taken to Mayo General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the truck was not injured.
The road has been closed for a forensic collision examination and diversions are in place. The road is expected to be closed for until this evening. Witnesses are asked to contact Westport Garda station on 098 50230 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
