Scan will decide Moylette’s Euros fate

BOXER Ray Moylette is having a scan on his injured neck this evening (Tuesday), but remains confident that he’ll be fit to fly to Ukraine next week for a training camp ahead of the European Championships.
“The way things are going at the minute, I’ll be on the plane,” the Islandeady man told The Mayo News.
The scan is ‘more a precaution than anything’, says Moylette, who has been improving in recent days. But the injury – which he sustained while sparring last Tuesday night – was serious enough to rule him out of two internationals at the weekend.
“It’s definitely a lot better now,” he explained. “The day or two after, I was very worried about it; I had no movement at all. But I’ve good movement now and it’s improving nearly 100 per cent every day.”
The St Anne’s club member was due to box in Cork last Friday and in Dublin on Sunday against French opposition in preparation for the European Championships, where he’s scheduled to represent Ireland in the 64kg division in Belarus.
“I could have  done with the fights, but I’ll just have to train that bit harder now,” he explained. “I wasn’t fit to box, and the doctor ruled me out.”
After missing most of 2012 through injury, it would be most unfortunate if the defending European champion was to be ruled out of this year’s showpiece event. He ‘put a lot of work in’ at a recent training camp in Kazakstan, but needs to get ‘the all-clear’ ahead of next week’s flight to Ukraine for another training camp.
The 23-year-old has received no funding from the Irish Sports Council for the coming year, and is focusing on the European Championships as his ticket back to the highest grade of funding.
