From July 1 this year those who own a a home must pay the property tax according to the home’s market value. However, the Mayo branch of the national group, ‘Attack The Tax’ are traveling the county telling the public how the group say people can legally and lawfully refrain from paying the tax. Speaking to The Mayo News about the talks Dara Kelly from the Mayo branch said attendance at meetings so far had been high.
“The attendance has been good, we’ve been to Westport, Crossmolina and Belmullet and the average attendance has been 60 to 70,” said Kelly.
Explaining the how people can lawfully not pay the tax, Kelly said people can pay €2 to the attackthetax.com group who are currently taking a case to court believing that the property tax is unconstitutional.
“If people pay €2 they then automatically become a stakeholder in the case and can return the property tax form with a designated sticker showing they are part of the group,” explained Kelly.
Mr Kelly said the more people that join the case action, the more affective the action will be.
“It would prick a few ears and have weight in court if people join. The government are using fear and that’s not the way it should be,” concluded Mr Kelly.
