Prospective musicians will get the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument as part of a new TG4 programme which will be filmed in Belmullet.
Gloach an Cheoil is a new TG4 series which will give people in Ireland the chance to learn to play a musical instrument while also uniting unused or discarded musical instruments with people who have always wanted to learn to play, but never had the opportunity.
There will be a music hub located in each province and the centre for Connacht will be in Áras Inis Gluaire in Belmullet, Each of the four centres will have a well-known and respected musician to act as a mentor, inspiring the community to get involved. The mentor for Belmullet is Ragús’s accordion maestro Fergal Ó Murchú. Fergal will also encourage those who are learning to play and make sure they are putting in the time and dedication required to master their chosen instrument.
There are two ways people can get involved in the series, one way is to donate or loan an instrument or to sign up for free music lessons. People who may have a musical instrument at home which hasn’t been used in years and would like to see it put to good use are asked to join the ‘Amnesty for Instruments’ while those who feel they would like to learn to play an instrument are asked to sign up to one of the Amnesty days.
The Amnesty will start in Belmullet on Sunday, April 28 from 11am to 3pm and lessons are available to people aged 16 years and over.
Assessors will be on hand to decide if the instruments can still have a useful life and if needed they will be restored. The series is produced by Mind The Gap Films and they guaranteed that all instruments are fully insured while in the loan bank and, if loaned, will be returned to their owners in better shape than when they were loaned.
For those who want to learn they will be paired up with an instrument from the Glaoch an Cheoil loan bank and introduced to a tutor to get them on the road to being a fully-fledged musician.
For more information or to register an interest in loaning an instrument please go to the website www.glaochancheoil.ie, e-mail; info@glaochancheoil.ie or call 0818 222 070.
