IT was the tragic death of islander Tommy Gibbons in 2009 which prompted the call for a Pontoon at Rosmoney Pier to allow safe access for boatmen to one of Mayo’s busiest piers.
That call became a reality last week when members of the Mayo Sailing Club, islanders, boatmen and funding officials gathered at Rosmoney Pier for the opening for public use of the new floating Pontoon. The new facility which is located approximately 30 metres from the edge of the permanent pier will allow users of the pier to board and disembark from their boats in a convenient and safe manner.
Following the tragic death of Mr Gibbons, who drowned while attempting to get into his boat at the pier, the Rosmoney Pontoon Committee was established to spearhead the development of a pontoon for one of Mayo’s busiest piers.
The objective was to promote a facility whereby all users of the pier in Rosmoney can board and disembark from their boats in a convenient and safe manner. Rosmoney, due to its nature, is very tidal but now the majority of boats will not be restricted by the tides to get in and out of the water.
“The committee can take great satisfaction in their efforts to make a difference in the community and the initial feedback on the completed works is hugely positive at all levels,” Damien Cashin, Chairperson of Rosmoney Pontoon Committee told the gathering along the pontoon.
The development consists of a floating pontoon and ramp with safety railings, a new water source and power facilities which makes it feasible for boats and water craft to moor at Rosmoney, including local supply and fish farm vessels. Islanders will be allowed to tie their boats to the pontoon while on business on the mainland while other boat users are to use it for loading and uploading.
Funding was secured through the Rural Development Programme and was approved for 75 per cent funding of  €149,878 with the total project cost of €199,838.
Mr Cashin thanked South West Mayo Development and Mayo County Council for all their support in making the development a reality.
“We are grateful to Sue O’Toole and all at South West Mayo Development Company who took this project on board and ran with it from initial contact we had with them, their hard work and the funding support have been a key factor in bringing this project to fruition,” he said.
Michael Biggins, Chairman, South West Mayo Development Company said they were are delighted to be able to support this project and congratulated all involved.
Rosmoney is located 8km from Westport town and adjoins Clew Bay. Rosmoney Bay is currently the centre of access to Clew Bay for a wide number of users. Currently there are over 100 marine craft of various descriptions moored in Rosmoney. Following the completion of this development the amenity will increase access for visiting yachts and motorboats.
