Three men are to face prosecutions over the non payment of the Household Charge after a High Court challenge fails
Household Charge challenge struck out
Three men are to face prosecutions over the non payment of the Household Charge after a High Court challenge taken by one was struck out. Peter Anthony Keegan of Belclare, Westport, appeared before last Thursday’s Westport District Court, which heard his High Court challenge against the household charge was struck out. Mr Keegan was the first person in the State to face prosecution for non-payment of the charge relating to six units in one building in Westport. He brought a challenge to the Charge to the High Court stating it was unconstitutional, but it was struck out by Mr Justice Murphy, last week. Mr Ward McEllin, solicitor for Mayo County Council, stated that similar prosecutions were being brought against Mr John Joe Duffy, Coraroya, Ballinrobe, and Mr Desmond Horan of Abbey Street, Ballina. Judge Mary Devins said she would adjourn the proceedings until April 4 to fix a date for hearing.
