Met Éireann has issued a warning as freezing temperatures grip the country. The warning covers 12 counties, including Mayo, as snow and icy conditions are promised. Temperatures dipped below zero across the county over the weekend and were forecast to hit a cool minus five degrees in Mayo last night (Monday), with snow in parts. The east of the country is expected to receive the coldest of the weather and snowfalls of between three and eight centimetres. Temperatures in the west will gradually climb to seven degrees by the end of the week and into the weekend. Due to the freezing temperatures promised, Age Action is urging older people to ensure they stay warm in their homes during the current cold snap. Age Action Spokesman Eamon Timmins said it was essential for people to take adequate steps to remain well and warm. “These kind of weather conditions are difficult for everyone, but they are especially challenging for older people, and older people living alone. It is also vital that communities play their part by calling to older neighbours over the coming days to ensure they do not have to venture out for provisions, such as food, fuel or medical supplies,” said Mr Timmins. “The temperature in your home is crucial,” Mr Timmins said. “Medical research has found that when temperatures fall below 16 degrees Celsius there is an increased risk of respiratory problems. Where it drops below 12 degrees, the blood thickens and there is an increased risk of stroke and heart.”
