No more violence against women – Castlebar Rape Crisis Centre marks V-Day

MAYO Rape Crisis Centre (MRCC) is set to join a global campaign to stop violence against women on Valentine’s Day, Thursday (February 14) next. MRCC staff and volunteers will mark the international V-Day gathering – One Billion Rising – with friends and survivors of violence at 1.30pm in Market Square, Castlebar. V-Day, the global activist movement to end violence against women and girl, aims to make this year’s gatherings the biggest in its history.    
One Billion Rising was founded to highlight and take action against the fact that one-in-three women around the world will be beaten or raped during their lifetime. With the world population now at 7 billion, this means that around one billion females are subject to such violence. 
This year Mayo Rape Crisis Centre will join with activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, women and men, survivors and victims from across the world ‘to express their outrage, demand change, strike, dance, and rise in defiance of the injustices women suffer, demanding an end at last to violence against women’.
V-Day founder is Tony award-winning writer, activist and author of The Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler. Established in 1998, V-Day demands that violence against girls and women must end.
Eve Ensler says: “When we started V-Day 14 years ago, we had the outrageous idea that we could end violence against women. Now, we are both stunned and thrilled to see that this global action is truly escalating and gaining force, with union workers, parliament members, celebrities, and women of all backgrounds coming forward to join the campaign. When we come together on February 14, 2013 to demand an end to violence against women and girls it will be a truly global voice that will rise up.”
