Manulla man guilty of theft from employers


A Manulla man is to be assessed by the Probation Services after he pleaded guilty to the theft of €2,570 from his employers, a lending institution.
SeΡn O’Doherty (49) of Cortoon, Manulla pleaded guilty to the charges before the court, theft from Provident Personal Credit Limited during his employment with the company from September 14, 2011 to February 6, 2012.
O’Doherty falsified four loan documents for four people who had previously obtained loans from the company. He forged their signatures and took the money himself, amounting to a total of €2,300. A further €270 was payments received by O’Doherty from other clients which he failed to lodge to the company’s accounts.
Inspector Joe McKenna said the company were alerted when there were arrears and the people whose names had been forged were contacted and said they knew nothing about the loans.
The court also heard the company were alerted by the content of Mr O’Doherty’s resignation letter on February 6, 2012.
Judge Mary Devins noted that the theft had started very shortly after he commenced work and asked if that was the reason he took the job.
Defending solicitor John Geary said this wasn’t the case and told the court that his client, a single father of three, has had a very difficult life and has undertaken to repay the amount. He said that Mr O’Doherty was ‘deeply ashamed’ and ‘profoundly regrets’ what happened. Mr Geary added that the money was taken because he needed to pay for one of his son’s education. Judge Devins adjourned the matter until March 19 for the preparation of a Probation Report.
