Angler hospitalised after fishing hook catches in eye
AN angler was brought to Mayo General Hospital by the Achill RNLI after a fishing hook caught him in the eye. The man was part of a fishing party of around eight people who were angling north of Clare Island last Sunday, January 13, when the accident occurred around midday. It is understood that a hook caught the victim between the eyeball and the eyelid and a distress call was issued almost immediately. At the time, crew of the Achill RNLI were doing offshore training in Clew Bay and were able to respond quickly when the alarm was raised. The injured man was removed from the fishing boat onto the lifeboat and was transported to Kildavnet on Achill Island where a local doctor attended the injury. The doctor warranted that the injury was serious enough and the man was transferred to hospital. A spokesperson for the Achill lifeboat told The Mayo News that the fishing party were local men and believes that the injury will not have long-term consequences for the man.
