A HUNGARIAN national remains in a critical condition in hospital a week after her car crashed over the Quay wall in Newport and into the sea.
The 34-year-old woman, named locally as Edina Voros, remains on a life support machine in Mayo General Hospital after her car inadvertently crashed into the sea last Sunday week. Ms Voros’ mother flew into Ireland last Thursday and she has been by her bedside ever since.
Ms Voros had been driving her newly-bought car sometime between 8.30am and 8.40am on Sunday morning last when it went over the quay wall and entered the water. The tide was in at the time and the car landed in approximately 20 feet of water, with Ms Voros unable to escape.
An elderly man who was walking in the area saw the incident and called the emergency services, who fought frantically to rescue Ms Voros from the submerged car.
Approximately half an hour after the car entered the water a local diver retrieved the unconscious Ms Voros and she was rushed to Mayo General Hospital where she remains on a life support machine.
Ms Voros has been living in Newport for a the past six years and worked in the GrΡinne Uaile pub in the town.
